The format, precisely

• Episodes run roughly one to three minutes. A series is anywhere from five episodes to well over a hundred.
• Shot vertically, 9:16, for a phone held upright. Watching on a desktop generally means a letterboxed column.
• Serialized rather than episodic — episodes end on a hook and are meant to be watched in order, in a run.
• Plot moves at a speed that would be absurd at feature length. A betrayal, a reveal and a reversal inside four minutes is normal and is the point.

How an episode actually gets made

The common pipeline in 2026 is not one button. A writer works out the beats and the cliffhanger placement, character references are locked so faces stay consistent between shots, individual shots are generated and regenerated against those references, then the results are cut, graded, scored and subtitled in ordinary editing software. The generative model does the photography. Almost everything else is the same job it has always been.

That is why the quality spread in this category is so wide. The tools have made the camera nearly free and have done nothing at all to make story, pacing or performance free.

What it is currently good at

• Settings a small team could never afford — a ruined city, an ancient court, an aircraft carrier, another planet.
• Volume. A hundred-episode run from a team of one or two is achievable in a way it simply was not before.
• Animation and stylised work, where nobody is expecting the image to behave like a camera in the first place.

What it is still bad at

• Faces holding still across a cut. Consistency between shots is the single most visible failure and the one viewers notice first.
• Hands, crowds and anything where objects have to touch each other convincingly.
• Subtle performance. Big emotions land; a small, ambiguous reaction usually does not.
• Long unbroken takes, which is part of why the format's fast cutting suits it so well.

Is it disclosed?

It should be, and on Generated Worlds it is required — creators declare AI-assisted production and remain responsible for rights, releases and disclosure on their own work. Elsewhere in the category, labelling is inconsistent enough that the safest assumption on an unlabelled vertical series is that you cannot tell from the pixels alone.
