Ethan and I walked back toward our homeroom together Vivian and Tim headed the other way all right I'll admit it I really did like Ethan he had good grades he was nice he was good-looking he helped people we were both subject reps for our English class so we walked to the faculty room together all the time

He always took the heavy stack of papers from me without asking. In any other story, that would have been a moment, but I knew better. He was just a good person. Ethan was class president.

He'd buy medicine for sick classmates. He'd clean the whiteboard when the helper forgot. During P.E., if a girl looked uncomfortable but was too shy to talk to Coach Martinez, he'd quietly step in and get her excused.

When a new transfer student sat alone at lunch, he found a few friendly kids to go sit with him. He was like a quiet son, always warming people up without making a big deal about But love him? Nah, not really. I just wanted to date someone.
