How Many YouTube Views Do You Need to Start Making Money?
YouTube views alone do not unlock ads. Check current subscriber, watch-hour and Shorts requirements, review rules and announced 2027 changes.

There is no single view count that automatically starts YouTube earnings. As of October 10, 2026, ad eligibility requires 1,000 subscribers plus either 4,000 qualified public watch hours in 12 months or 10 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days. Your channel still needs review and the relevant monetization setup. Off-platform episode sales follow separate rules.
Current eligibility is more than a view milestone
| Route | Subscribers | Additional requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Long-form | 1,000 | 4,000 qualified public watch hours in 12 months |
| Shorts | 1,000 | 10 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days |
Advertising eligibility as of October 10, 2026; routes are alternatives.
Shorts Feed watch time does not count toward the long-form watch-hour route. Use the eligibility counts in Studio, rather than adding every public play or every minute watched. Account, region and policy conditions also apply.
An established Instagram audience does not transfer its follower total into YouTube subscribers. You may have a loyal drama audience and still be early in the YouTube-specific application process. That is a reason to evaluate more than one earning model, not a reason to abandon the channel.
The earlier fan-funding tier is a different milestone
In eligible markets, expanded YPP can provide earlier access to selected fan-funding and Shopping features: 500 subscribers, three public uploads in 90 days, and either 3,000 qualified public watch hours in 12 months or 3 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days. Feature-specific conditions still apply.
This earlier tier does not establish eligibility for the standard advertising revenue share. Check which features your Studio actually offers before telling fans you have enabled memberships or another paid feature.
Long-form eligibility is measured in hours, not a fixed number of views
As an arithmetic example, 60,000 qualifying views averaging four minutes watched would total 240,000 minutes, or 4,000 hours. At two minutes per qualifying view, reaching that total would require 120,000 views. These examples illustrate the unit; neither predicts your channel’s eligibility.
Only qualifying watch time counts, and subscribers remain a separate condition. A public view count without duration and eligibility information cannot answer whether a channel has reached the watch-hour target.
Crossing the threshold does not create a guaranteed payout
Eligibility lets you apply. It does not establish approval, a particular rate or a first bank transfer. Content review, ad suitability and the relevant payment requirements remain part of the process.
Likewise, a video with 100,000 views has no universal earnings value. The format, qualifying audience and actual revenue matter. Once you have earning data, use your own reports to assess whether the series pays for its production.
Announced changes begin February 1, 2027
YouTube’s official update says new advertising and Premium entrants will need 1,000 subscribers plus 8,000 qualified watch hours in 365 days or 20 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days from February 1, 2027. Existing YPP status is not affected by that new entry threshold.
The announcement also sets a rolling 10-million-qualified-Shorts-view requirement for monthly Shorts Creator Pool earnings and asks creators to accept updated terms by January 31, 2027. These are announced future rules, not the October 2026 eligibility table above. Review the full update when planning a launch across that date.
Test paid continuation while you build YouTube eligibility
If your drama already has viewers who want the next part, GW lets you prepare a free opening and paid episodes through Creator Studio. GW episode sales do not require meeting YouTube’s ad-view thresholds; GW account setup, publication and payout conditions still apply.
Give viewers a clear series destination and explain where paid access begins. The paid episode route currently uses 10 tokens per episode, with a $1.99 direct checkout minimum. Viewer purchases are a different source of revenue from ads.
Check funded paid earnings and continued viewing before expanding the experiment. Promotional token unlocks are not paid creator revenue. A smaller audience can contain buyers, but no audience size guarantees a viable paid series.

Common questions
Can I earn YouTube ad revenue with 500 subscribers?
The expanded tier can unlock selected features in eligible markets, but it is not the standard ad-share threshold.
Do Shorts watch hours count toward long-form eligibility?
No. Watch time from the Shorts Feed does not count toward the long-form qualified public watch-hour route.
Does 100,000 YouTube views guarantee money?
No. View count alone establishes neither program eligibility nor earnings. Check the qualifying metrics and actual revenue reports.
Can I sell my drama before I qualify for YouTube ads?
You can test a separate paid episode model on GW after completing the required setup. Revenue requires funded purchases; it is not guaranteed by followers.
