Emma Wilson lands her first World Cup interview, and the footballer on the other side of the microphone is Oliver Scott — the boy she grew up with, ten years and one unfinished conversation ago. He has just scored the goal of his life, and the only thing he wants to know is whether she was watching. Between the questions she is supposed to be asking, the story goes back to the school newsroom where she lost a job she had earned to a girl with better presentation, and to everything neither of them said at the time.
