April's Last Fool — The Ring Finger Indentation

I picked up the pen and looked at the name Luciano Moretti on the paper. fine then I'll give you what you want I signed my name without the slightest hesitation after the staff confirmed the paperwork they began processing the divorce a dull pain spread from the ring finger of my left hand the moment I took off the wedding ring the pale indentation

at the base of my finger was exposed under the cold white fluorescent lights five years of etched into my flesh were wiped clean by a single piece of paper the official seal came down and five years of marriage ended absurdly just like that after the procedures were done Luciano turned around pulled a brand

new suit from the car and changed into it while Serafina took out a white veil and pinned it in her hair I sat in a chair watching this scene the the indentation on my ring finger still faintly burning. Five years ago, on the day Luciano and I held our wedding,

in that little church in Little Italy, he hadn't notified anyone from the family. Inside the church, there were only the two of us, and a half-drunk priest.

He wasn't even wearing a suit, just a leather jacket, with cheap matching rings from a gas station in his pocket. I reminded him to at least change into something more formal.
