The Boy Who Brought Him Back — Episode 6

My grip on Noah's hand tightened without thinking. Mommy, what's wrong? He looked up at me. Nothing.

His voice small. Want something to eat? Fries, burger, ice cream? Mommy, that stuff isn't healthy.

He shook a head, dead serious. Do you want some? I just stared at him. Then he asked.

Yes. Noah gave me a look, the kind of I-give-up-on-you look only a kid who's somehow more mature than the adults around him can pull off. He took my hand and led me toward the row of shops by the beat.

The woman behind the counter dropped fries into the fryer. Yeah, I saw it too. Quite the production. That many people just for wedding photos? Must be rich. Well, they're both gorgeous. The pictures will probably turn out stunning.

Noah stood quietly beside me. He'd always been strangely smart for his age. I never brought up his father, and he never asked. The fries were ready. Noah took them from me. Careful, hot. Wait till it cools.

I sighed. I know. The sea breeze drifted past us. For a moment, everything felt light, easy. Then I saw the massive wedding shoot up ahead. My feet stopped dead.
