Settling the Score — Episode 9

A servant rushed in and whispered something in Vivian's ear. Vivian's expression changed. The watch. The antique watch from Mrs. Room is missing.

The one sir gave her for her coming of age. That can't be. I saw it just this morning. Iris stood up, face going pale.

The butler led a search of the rooms. The watch was found under my pillow. The butler placed the watch on the coffee table. Every eye in the hall snapped toward it.

Iris stood beside Vivian, voice shaking. Mom, it can't be Claire. She was probably just curious, just looked at it. This family isn't short on things like this.

Couldn't she have just said something before taking it? Richard said nothing. Vivian looked like she wanted to sneak, but held back. Julian stood among the crowd holding a glass of red wine.

He glanced at the watch on the table, then looked at me. He turned his head at a male guest beside him. Just like I said. I smiled.

The recorder sat on the coffee table. I pressed play. Sound came from the recorder. First clip, Iris and Julian's voices.

Julian, Claire's just from a small town. She's never seen things like this. Don't stoop to her level. Now she's playing the victim?

Second clip, Iris's voice. The day of the banquet, put the thing under her pillow. After they find it, don't say a word. Just keep your head down.

Once it's done, the amount will cover your son's tuition for two years. The hall went silent. I switched off the recorder.
