Everyone went completely silent. Then Jace let me go. He smiled at me. Then he took my hand

and walked straight toward the door. As we passed Owen, he paused. Someone like her? You don't deserve to kiss her.

Owen's face went dark. Jace's car stopped in front of my house. Neither of us had said a word the entire ride. My heart was still racing.

Thanks. You didn't have to. Mia, you know all the answers. Why tank your scores on purpose?

Just to follow Owen to college? My breath caught. Three years. Not a single person had noticed.

I turned around. Jace's locker was covered in ugly photos of me. One photo fluttered down, landing right in front of me. I froze.

The strap of my backpack slipped off my shoulder. Jace glared around the hallway and yelled, Who did this? Show yourself!

Owen pushed through the crowd, waving his hand with a laugh. Chill, Captain. It was me. Just a joke.

Jace punched him right in the face.
